My life as an EMT

Twenty-something y/o female, with a passion for interceding for others on their worst days so that they can live to pursue their best.

I have created this section to specifically share and discuss topics related to  Emergency Medicine and its impact on my life as well as tools, resources, experiences, and even opportunities for others that would like to pursue EMS as a way to give back to their community or to get a better understanding of medicine as a whole, I am excited to start this new blogging journey you guys please let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to post as often as I can.

Intro to my life in EMS:

I encountered my first bloody trauma when I was 6 y/o;I was a first grader and I witnessed a young girl a couple years older than me get her finger crushed in a 4-inch thick gym bathroom door (why on earth the gym doors in an elementary school were that thick and heavy I will never know). I remember the day quite vividly; when the incident occurred my entire class was lined up waiting to enter the gym, there were no adults present and the pain this young woman was in was enough to make her scream with such a pitch it could have made your blood curdle. In the midst of this, the entirety of my class was either crying or standing in shock. I remember looking both ways to make sure no one ran into me as I ran across the way to open the door and free her finger. I have always been someone who takes charge in an emergency and in really any situation, even my six y/o self. I quickly assessed her injury to the best of my 6 y/o selfs ability; her pinky was nearly completely amputated it was hanging from a "small flap". I then instructed my classmates to calm down as I worked quickly to get help. Later that day her mother stopped me on my way to class after recess and thanked me for "saving her daughters pinky" she informed me that her doctor told her that if I hadn't have acted when I did that he may not have been able to repair the damage as well as he did. I was glad I was there and remained friends with this young woman up to the present day.

I have always been a person dedicated to restoring and being there when someone needed to be helped or healed. I volunteered in the nurse's office in elementary school, and I helped in several other incidents around the playground which even though I wasn't directly involved in I always seemed to be nearby. I grew up across the street from a fire station, so naturally every birthday we would pay our firemen and women a visit; we also would go over just to have ice cream after they had spent a good portion of their day fighting a fire, and after September 11th every year we would take a cake and thank our EMS fire and rescue members for their service. Later in high school after finding a program that would allow me to get my EMT-B certification I jumped at the opportunity to serve my community in a different and more specialized way that not only allowed me to further explore my passion for medicine and people but also to be trained in how to best act in an emergency situation to stabilize and save a life and to get someone to the help they need.

Fast forward to today, I am currently an EMT-B, I have spent time volunteering in multiple areas and am also not only further pursuing my passion for medicine as an EMT and a student studying to one day be a physician but I have the opportunity to proactively inspire change and share compassion and serve others in a meaningful and important way and I am loving every second of it. One day I will be able to use the skills I have developed and will develop in the future in order to serve as a physician taking the lead in a medical team, with the skills, experience, and knowledge necessary to best serve each of my patients;  as I continue to become better equipped to serve in this role I will continue to serve others to the best of my ability with every skill I have been gifted with.
