Volunteering is always a big part of a good premed's activity log but what types of volunteering opportunities are out there? How do you find them? There are hundreds of opportunities out there from hospital volunteering to local schools but here are a few that I have found to keep you in medical volunteering.
If you are like me you love the hospital environment (this can be in an actual hospital, clinic, or mobile clinic, among other medical settings) and want to spend as much time as you can there with your future colleagues and patients. Recently I moved from my home of 18 years and had to start over as far as looking for volunteer opportunities and have found some things that I absolutely adore.
TIP:
Some things I recommend you look into when searching for volunteer opportunities include:
- Using your medical licensing to help your community at a Free Clinic, you not only get to do something you love but you can also help those in need and build your clinical hours with patients.
-If you are a licensed EMS provider you can volunteer at a volunteer with a "volunteer rescue squad"
- If you don't have a medical license no worries Free Clinics are always looking for community volunteers to help in the office and with directing patients.
- Community outreaches such as medical research fundraisers and awareness campaigns
- Being a Candy Striping and other community volunteer opportunities in hospitals
- Volunteer at a geriatric care center, playing games with the elderly or just talking with them
- Disability resource centers, opportunities at places like this can include helping those that are blind, deaf, physically disabled etc. there are resource centers in every city and this is a really great way to give back to your community.
These are just a few ideas of the many. There are also some online resources you can use to find volunteer opportunities in your area to name a couple: http://www.volunteermatch.org/ , or look up and contact your local hospital's volunteer coordinator, some medical schools even have volunteer opportunity information so don't be afraid to reach out to the medical communities around you, and if all else fails do a simple google search for "medical volunteering opportunities".
